EU 'gives Greece six more months': Bailout is set to be extended after country's left-wing leader 'finally agrees to discuss cutting pensions'

  • Greece and eurozone creditors are edging towards an eleventh-hour deal
  • EU leaders said to be considering extending Greek bailout by six months
  • Move would give debt-stricken nation up to 18billion euros in rescue funds
  • Greece needs to borrow more cash by June 30 or it will default on its debts

14 June 2015 1 am CET - Count down: only four days of pro-forma negotiations to go....

(editorial). It is clear EU, IMF and ECB have the right standpoint.

Tsipras starts everyday, upon awaking, telling that 'a deal is very near'

He now sent a team to Brussels, Saturday June 13, that should work fulltime on a 'complicated deal' until June 18, EU finance ministers meeting.

Tsipras immediately starts on the wrong foot:

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2015/06/13/greek-debt-relief_n_7577400.html

perhaps to actively give a sign that he wants to grexit.

4 more days of 'pro forma negotiations for the plebs', but more sophisticated people, like the readers of this blog, know the outcome: disagreement and Grexit on June 18! Still 4 - 5 nights of sleeping, then we can rejoy in a Grexit! And first bids on  http://www.δραχμή.gr/,

Who can perform the music? NEW LYRICS!

'Bye, bye, little Greek friend' (after 'Bye, bye, Miss American Pie')

A long, long time ago
I can still remember how that drama used to make me smile
And I knew if I had my chance
That I could make those people dance
And maybe they'd be happy for a while

But Varoufakis made me shiver
With every paper he'd deliver
Bad news on the doorstep
I couldn't take one more step

I can't remember if I cried
When I read about his latest 'No'
But something touched me deep inside
The day friendship died

(refrain)
So bye, bye, little Greek friend
Drove my Chevy to the dispenser but the ATM was dry
And them good ole boys were drinking ouzo 'n rye
Singin' this'll be the day that you die
This'll be the day that you die

IMF walks out of Greece talks:

http://www.theguardian.com/business/2015/jun/11/imf-walks-out-of-greece-bailout-talks

Coming week - between now, June 11 and deadline 18 June (earlier set by EU) - could seal Greece's fate:

BRUSSELS (AP) — International creditors sent Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras home from a summit Thursday with a clear message: swiftly tone down your demands in the bailout talks over the next week or face financial ruin.

The International Monetary Fund took the toughest stance, saying it was bringing its negotiators back to Washington as there had been no sign of compromise to bridge the sides' differences.

11 June 2015 - By no means Germany would allow a third program to Greece after June 30; usual differences on pensions and labour continue to exist

Germany wants no third program after June 30:

http://www.reuters.com/article/2015/06/11/eurozone-greece-germany-government-idUSL5N0YX07O20150611

Differences remain:

http://www.euronews.com/2015/06/10/greece-s-tsipras-flies-to-brussels-for-crunch-default-talks/

"The talks have been deadlocked over Greece’s rejection of the creditors’ demands for cuts in pensions and unpopular labour market reforms as conditions for releasing frozen bailout funds.

Greece will be in default at the end of June without fresh funds to let it repay 1.6 billion euros to the IMF. It put off a smaller repayment earlier this month under a rarely used IMF rule allowing it to combine all payments due in any month."

It is June 11 - June 18 is EU deadline, 7 calendar days and working days remain for Greece.

When not stopped, Tsipras would be capable of shouting daily 'very close to deal' for many decennia to come.

EU, IMF and ECB handled affairs very friendly I find.

The problem is a 'collective psychosis' of the Greeks, that a state can have over 50% of GDP as public expenditures. What happens then, is that all state-dependent people vote on semi-communists while the private people/sectors increasingly suffer, GDP shrinks as well as tax incomes whereafter shockwise dismissal of government workers is necessary anyway.

10 June 2015 9 pm CET - Merkel may be prepared to give Greece a lifeline - rest of EU including IMF 'no'

10 June 2015 - Greece 4 days before inofficial Grexit. Hollande and Merkel POSTPONE meeting Tsipras

10 June 2015 - Greece 4 days before inofficial Grexit. Hollande and Merkel POSTPONE meeting Tsipras

Editorial.

Greece's 'most impatient enemies' are now the fellow-EU countries, not IMF or ECB. German television (ZDF) had inside talks with lots of EU finance ministers, and most of them have lost their patience with Greece and do not want to spend more time on Greece, and certainly not extend discussions beyond June 30 - the end date of opt-in for the last 7,2 b tranche of the bailout program.

As a release of the 7,2 b tranche would require agreement of all euro currency countries through parliament, it is often said that June 14 is the last practical possibility to have a deal, in order to make it through all parliaments before June 30.

All this: provided ECB does NOT increase emergency lending (ELA) to Greece before June 30.

Surprisingly, Hollande and Merkel INCREASED pressure on Greece by cancelling the meeting that was scheduled today with Tsipras in Brussels. EU found Greece's latest proposal even inferior to its earlier proposal, and still not addressing pensions and labour issues.

http://www.investing.com/analysis/pressing-for-greek-concessions,-merkel-and-hollande-keep-tsipras-waiting-254616

In order to get a 'flavour' of the very old, dogmatic half communist thinking in Greece, read this Greek blog:

http://www.drachmi5.gr/ellada/lafazanis-na-min-exontothei-o-laos-mesa-stin-eyrozoni

You can read the Greek as English by putting above URL in the Google URL translator

http://itools.com/tool/google-translate-web-page-translator

It is clear Tsipras prefers a continued career within Syriza political party OVER the risk of a possible Grexit.

Tsipras is nevertheless flying to Brussels, but may not be able to talk to anyone else than 'Manneken Pis'.

The EU has done all it can.

One just has to wait for a Greek internal payment default later this month, with payment of salaries and pensions. If those 'obligatory' payments default even for a few percent, a sort of 'civil war' will break out in Greece, further slowing down economy, decreasing tax income and making Greece's GDP expenses of over 50% untenable.

IMF gave permission to postpone Greek repayments to end of June. But if Greece fails to repay end of June, IMF - in order to be credible - has to classify Greece as defaulting country, and then 'junk time' and 'cash crunch chaos' start, and offers for domain http://www.δραχμή.gr/, will flow in, in the inbox of internetavenue@outlook.com

http://in.reuters.com/article/2015/06/06/eurozone-greece-tsipras-idINL5N0YS0KK20150606

Tsipras assails proposals, in parliament

http://www.latimes.com/world/europe/la-fg-greek-leader-assails-proposals-20150606-story.html

Thus, Tsipras did not make any attempt to break the confined and wrong thinking frame of collective Greece.

Editorial remark: a country that thinks that 50% of GDP can consist of public expenditures, is 'economically stupid' and in an 'economic psychosis'. It is 'half communism', and half communism is very bad because voters depending on public income, will always repeat voting on the 'half communists', who will 'suppress' the private sector that in fact is always the engine of an economy. A shrinking private sector causes a downward spiral with less tax incomes, further cuts in public expenditures, more surpression of private sector etc.

Greece as a nation has to learn lots about economy, and seems to have made no progress in 'economic education' during 2015.

The troika handled the issues well: it was patient, made extra efforts, and now leaves Greece in the month of June, on its own.

Theoretically, Greece has a timeframe between now, June 6 and June 30....but practically, because of required approval of a deal by all euro countries, Greece's timeframe is more: June 6 to June 14.

It seems unlikely Greece will suddenly understand more of economics the next 8 days.

Greece, including people on the street, very much rely on the premise that a Grexit would cause 'far more collateral damage to others than to Greece itself'. A deputy minister even made the statement that a 'Grexit would cause far more damage to world economy than the bankruptcy of a 'little bank as Lehman Brothers' did in 2008 (!!)'.

EU extension of deadlines beyond June 30 would undermine troika's credibility and by no means increase collective Greek intelligence, certainly not regarding economics. We bet that if Aristoteles would be flown in a couple of weeks, even with millennia of 'missed history and science', he would still be the wisest man in Greece and could point Greece the right direction.

Greece's EU/IMF lenders have asked Athens to commit to sell off state assets, enforce pension cuts and press on with labour reforms, two sources familiar with the plan said on Thursday, demands that would cross the Greek government's "red lines".
If Greece were to accept the plan, lenders would aim to unlock 10.9 billion euros in unused bank bailout funds that were returned to the European Financial Stability Fund. This would enable Greece to cover its financial needs through July and August, the sources said.

The Agenda: No deal in Brussels.....

Good morning.

Greece’s future remains as confused as ever, after Wednesday night’s crunch meeting in Brussels between prime minister Alexis Tsipras and EC president Jean-Claude Juncker broke up without a deal.

After speaking for more than four hours, Tsipras emerged after midnight to announce that Greece couldn’t accept some of the proposals put together by its creditors.

Instead, he argued, any deal to unlock bailout funds must be based on his own side’s offer.

As he put it:

“The realistic proposals on the table are the proposals of the Greek government.”

And Tsipras has just tweeted that discussions will continue....

//

"But there appears to be less consensus on pension reforms and VAT reform, with Greece refusing to roll over and accept a five-page list of proposals created by the International Monetary Fund, the European Central Bank and the European Commission."
